Jumping from 89 to 128.2 makes Bird the highest-scoring eyewear brand in the world... ever. (Cool huh!)
Most of you will know we’re a B Corp, and we’re proud to use our business for good with the goal of pioneering change. But being a B Corp is a journey and not a destination, so every three years we have to undergo a meticulous recertification process.
This means putting our whole business under a giant microscope (and we mean our WHOLE business), everything from financials, raw materials, global shipping, factories, workers, all the way down to how much water our office uses (and everything in between).
This year we recertified as a B Corp with the incredible score of score of 128.2 points, and we'd like to share why this matters.
Certified B Corporations are rigorously verified to meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact, and balance purpose with profit. They are third-party verified and legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.
The median score for the average business is around 50 points and you need to score over 80 points to certify as a B Corp. Even then, over 90% of B Corps don't score over 100 points, so for us, moving from 89 to 128.2 is a demonstration of what we've achieved in the last three years.
Some of the factors contributing to our growing success include planting our very own Bird forest in Devon as part of our carbon reduction drive, alongside developing a new line of products made from waste collected in Devon, and our buidling out our transparent supply chain.
We proud to now produce low-carbon frames that have an impact of just 113 grams of CO2 which is less carbon emissions than using your phone for 1 hour.
“For us it’s not just about creating exceptional frames, but extending the mentality that brands and companies should give back more than they take, and leave a positive legacy for people and the planet. We believe the industry has a once-in-history opportunity to demonstrate that creativity and respect for nature can lead to authentic sustainability”.
Ed Bird, CEO.
Thank you to our supportive flock and dedicated team at the heart of what we do; we couldn’t have done it without you.
So what now?
Well with a A++ score in the bag, we’re now able to pull our heads from underneath the microscope and crack on creating world-changing eyewear for our flock. Better for people, better for the planet.
